The best way of housetraining Yorkshire Terriers is to set up a schedule for potty breaks. But be patient in your expectations, as Yorkie
housetraining will take time and effort, usually from several weeks to a few months, until your Yorkie will learn their routine.
To help your Yorkshire Terrier know when it's the right time to go potty, simply stick to the routine consistently. Your Yorkie is like most
people in that when they awake, they normally go to the bathroom right away.
Well, your Yorkie needs the same courtesy. Don't stop to make coffee or check the newspaper - take your Yorkshire Terrier out as soon as
you're up and moving. He's been holding it all night, so don't make this difficult.
This potty break should be short, say 5 to 10 minutes or so. Your Yorkie can come inside and have breakfast while you get ready for your day.
Before you leave the house, take your Yorkie out for a potty break, so they've got the best chance for success.
If he's had some time to eat and let the food settle, he'll be ready for elimination before going into the crate or the room where he spends
the day. With a puppy, you need to come back for a mid-day potty break and a mid-afternoon break if possible.
If you're at work all day, you need to arrange for a family member or friend to handle those breaks for you. Ensure that whoever does this
follows the routine you have created precisely. Ideally, the potty breaks should be short, about 5 to 10 minutes, and should not be confused with play time. You want the Yorkshire Terrier to understand and know the difference between potty and play.
Keep the same house training Yorkshire Terriers routine for dinnertime. Let your Yorkshire Terrier out for a potty break as soon as you return home from work or school. Set a time to feed the Yorkshire Terrier and don't get more than thirty minutes off schedule.
It's better to feed the Yorkie early in the evening, so that the food digests and he's ready for an elimination break before bedtime. Then
follow the same procedure that you do in the morning.
Keep notes on the times and schedule for potty training Yorkshire Terriers . You can even create a simple checklist of the Yorkie's schedule and post it on the refrigerator. This will keep your whole family on track and will also help you figure out your Yorkie's potty pattern.
Be sure to give your Yorkie lots of positive praise and affection when he goes potty. Verbal praise and a small food treat work great. In the
old days, dog trainers advised punishment when a dog went in the house...but this has been shown to be less effective than the positive
reinforcement Yorkshire Terrier house training.
Since your Yorkshire Terrier wants you to love him, he will be willing to try his best to please you. Just don't make it difficult. If you're running late and miss his potty break, clean it up and get back on track without scolding him. Your Yorkie depends on you for many things, including staying on target for Yorkshire Terrier house training. He doesn't want to mess in his space - or in yours - so help him do the right thing by sticking to a schedule.
Grooming Your Yorkie |
One of the advantages of the Yorkshire Terrier in regards to grooming, is that you do not necessarily need to bring your dog to a professional groomer. Yorkies are easy to groom. Here are some basic tips: Since Yorkies have long straight hair, it is preferable to use a comb rather than a brush, which could damage your dog's hair. Use a larger comb for your dog's coat, and a fine comb to cover the areas around the eyes and whiskers. Comb your dog's hair every day to avoid tangles; doing so will also keep the hair clean until you decide it's time to bathe your dog. If your dog's hair gets tangled up, simply wet the tangles and use your fingers to work them out. Another important hygiene tip is to keep the dog's underside free of urine stains. Do so, by washing the area daily. Do not use shampoo, as daily washing may end up irritating the dog's skin.
